ADHD is a much stigmatized diagnosis. Most people only consider the negative and confusing aspects of ADHD, which leads to people with the disorder to also focus on these aspects, making them feel as if there is something wrong with them. Instead of focusing on the negative, highlighting the gift of ADHD can help people change in positive noticeable ways.
People of all ages who have been diagnosed with ADHD have six major gifts, including creativity, emotional expressiveness, exuberance, interpersonal intuition, leadership, and ecological consciousness. By focusing all attention on the negative aspects, it does not allow people with ADHD to fully explore their many gifts. The negative mindset that comes with all of the demeaning thoughts surrounding ADHD can be a self-fulfilling prophecy and an excuse for people to not show the motivation to excel in everything they do.
While many children are reprimanded in school for their gifts, these gifts can be beneficial later in life. The curious nature of children with ADHD can allow them to not only work well in an office setting, but it can also help them in the growing digital and global technology. Curiosity paired with the visual learning aspect of ADHD, allows people who have been diagnosed to be well suited for new jobs, such as developing apps, website creation, design, and social media marketing.
By encouraging all of the gifts of children with ADHD, it will allow them to explore their talents and learn more about the world around them. It will take away the stigma of the diagnosis and help them move forward throughout their lives.
