Life After an Eating Disorder

We need food. We always have and we always will. For many people, this is a simple reality, but for someone recovering from an eating disorder this can make life very complex. Recovery from this condition is an ongoing process, but wellness is achievable. After an individual attends an eating disorder program, combating the disorder is still a part of daily life. Having the help and support of trained professionals and supportive family and friends can make this process easier.  

After an eating disorder, an individual can benefit from learning and integrating some of these new habits: 

  1. Remind yourself of factual material about nutrition and health

  2. Continue to work on developing self esteem and self acceptance

  3. Increase the mind-body connection and be in tune with what your body needs

  4. Share with others when you are struggling and need support

  5. Have a team that includes a therapist, psychiatrist, and dietician 

  6. Have family members get educated about eating disorders and the best ways to be helpful

  7. Hold onto the reality that you DO have power and choice about how your treat your body (even if the eating disorder tricks you into thinking otherwise)

  8. Be involved in a group with others who are recovering from eating disorders

  9. Appreciate all of the things that your body does for you

  10. Create your own beliefs about positive body image to replace what you have learned from mainstream media 

These are a few ways that you can maintain your health and recovery after an eating disorder. There are many more ways that you can integrate wellness into your life and it is helpful to consult with a professional about the next steps you can take. It is possible to reclaim your life and freedom after an eating disorder and the best way to do it is one day at a time.
