The Power of Tech Distraction

With all of the new technology that is available, from smart phones to tablets, it can seem to make your job easier. However, it is also important to keep in mind that the abundance of technology can also lead to serious distraction problems. Unfortunately, technology distraction does not only affect adults in the workforce, but can also have harmful effects for children.

If you work in an office, you are probably used to the constant dings of incoming emails and the ringing of phones. While you may think that you are able to “multi-task” and answer emails and phones while still doing your best on your work, you probably are not.  Studies have shown that the even though you think that you are being more productive by multi-tasking, the work that you are doing is actually suffering.

Adults in office settings are not the only ones that have to be aware of tech distractions. Many school age children also fall victim to constant distractions, between texts from friends to new notifications on Facebook, it can be easy for children to get lost in technology. The type of tech distractions typically depend on the child. Social butterflies tend to be more distracted by texts and Facebook, while more reserved children tend to spend most of their time searching the web or playing video games.

Luckily, there are many techniques that are available to help prevent tech distractions in both adults and children. The most common technique is to remove all distractions while working, such as putting away cell phones and turning off the computer. Try to have an hour a day in the evening set aside every day to be tech free for the purpose of talking and connecting with your family.  More useful, is to find out the internal cause of the distraction. Whether it is stress or unhappiness, it is important to find out why you are distracted from your work so that you can work on fixing the internal problem.  Less time in front of the screen especially at the end of the day is also related to better quality of sleep and a feeling of being rested.
