How Giving Back Can Come Back To You

Do you find yourself feeling lethargic and unsatisfied? Do you wake up feeling apathetic or unfulfilled? If so, you may think you need to turn inward to address these issues. Focusing more and more on yourself, however, can end up leading you into a downward spiral. Putting energy towards giving back to others, however, can help you lose yourself in something meaningful and eventually feel fulfilled and purposeful. Here are a few ways working to improve your community and world can be good for you.

  • Benefitting Your Mind: Volunteering is proven to help alleviate depression, particularly because volunteering puts you into contact with others and social isolation is a key factor in depression. Do you feel that regular human interaction might be a lot to take on right now? Consider getting involved at a pet shelter. Volunteering can also improve your self-confidence.
  • Benefitting Your Body: Getting moving and getting sunshine can do wonders to turn your mood around. Volunteering can force you out of the house, even when you may not necessarily want to go out. Once outside, you will find that your spirit is lifted. Also, some volunteer opportunities can present opportunities for physical activity, from weeding in a local garden to playing a pick-up basketball game with at-risk teens.
  • Benefitting Your Network: Volunteering presents the opportunity to get connected to your local community. You can meet people with similar interests, and have the chance to exercise your social skills in a pressure-free environment.
